The work of a Pool Lifeguard

Pool Lifeguards are responsible for overseeing the safety of all pool users and provide a vitally important public service. Lifeguards are trained in Poolside Rescue, First Aid and Cardio-pulmonary Resuscitation (CPR). Pool Lifeguards have to ork in hot, humid and noisy environments and need to be able to work as part of a team, engage with members of the public to prevent accidents and ensure bather safety.

The work of a Lifeguard offers great flexibility and can often select the hours of work that best suits them either on a casual or contracted basis. Experienced Lifeguards often go on to complete their Beach Lifeguard Qualification and work abroad.

STA Pool Lifeguard

The STA Pool Lifeguard Qualification is widely recognised as the professional benchmark in the leisure industry and will provide you with the opportunity for employment at most UK Swimming Pools. The qualification also has widespread international recognition.

The STA Pool Lifeguard Qualification is awarded upon successful completion of the course and is valid for a period of 3 years. The candidate must attend the entire course and paste assessment to be awarded the STA Pool Lifeguard Qualification.

The courses will take place during half term breaks during the school holidays, and you will be trained on all aspects of lifeguarding. The assessment will take place on the last day and will take approximately 4 hours.

What’s involved in the Training?

The STA Pool Lifeguard course is intensive and rigorous, you will undertake a combination of theory and practical work and betrayed to carry our CPR, First Aid and given sufficient training to competently manage a range of pools.

Entry Requirements

  • Be 16 years of age or older at the time of assessment
  • Be able to perform practical demonstrations on the floor
  • Be able to jump and dive into deep water
  • Be able to swim 50 metres in under 1 minute
  • Be able to swim 100 metres on the front and 100 metres on the back without stopping
  • Be able to tread water for 30 seconds in deep water
  • Be able to surface dive and recover a submersible adult manikin from the deepest part of the pool
  • Be able to climb out of the pool unaided without the use of steps or ladders.
  • A level of personal fitness is necessary due to the demands of the pool lifeguard role, which learners will need to demonstrate during the course.
